BW Expresses Concern for Family of Missing Deck Cadet Kristoffer Galorio, Emphasizes Commitment To Transparent And Timely Communication

(Singapore, 30 January 2019)

On 28 December 2018, BW was alerted to a missing Deck Cadet on BW Oak, a 2008-built Isle-of-Man flagged Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC). A search at sea commenced immediately which involved three vessels and a C-130 aircraft under the guidance of the Honolulu Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC). All relevant authorities were also notified. Regrettably, the search was unsuccessful and called off after 40 hours upon guidance from the Honolulu MRCC.

No words can bring back a son, a Cadet on his first tour of duty, and we can understand the frustration felt by the family at not knowing exactly what happened to their son. The Company is deeply concerned to have lost a young man given to our care and a highly valued cadet. BW offers its heartfelt sympathies to Cadet Galorio’s family and friends.

Independent investigations into Cadet Galorio’s disappearance were conducted by authorities from Isle of Man, the Japanese Coast Guard and an internal investigation team from BW. To date, external investigations by authorities from the Isle of Man are still ongoing. BW’s internal investigations were led by our Head of Global Manning and Global Head of Fleet Security. A thorough and full internal investigation indicated that conduct of officers and crew in Cadet Galorio’s training regime were all in line with the high standards expected of BW crews.

The relationship between officers and crew and Cadet Galorio were also placed under close scrutiny. The crew of the BW Oak are good people, themselves with families to support and care for, and it is our belief that they acted in the best interest of the cadet during his time on board and like all at BW remain deeply shocked by the tragic turn of events.

BW remains fully committed to cooperating and sharing available information with all those affected in the hope that future incidents of this kind can be prevented.
